Let me first start off by saying that I'm not particularly a fan when it comes to pro skating. I often find it cheesy and boring, which is why I have never been to a COI or SOI show until today. My friend had an extra free ticket from a local radio station and I almost passed on the offer, but decided to go for the experience and I'm glad I did. It was a nice way to spend an evening.
The Superman opening was good, but I don't remember too much about it, to be quite honest.
Ilia was impressive in Too Darn Hot and got a lot of the ladies to scream. He landed a number of nice, clean triples, including a flip.
Ina/Zimmerman's number to You're Beautiful was also good, but no major tricks to wow the crowd.
Katia skated to a Spanish number next and I really enjoyed it. She was having trouble with the jumps tonight on both of her solo numbers, but she's got such a presence on the ice that you can't deny. Very nice to see her back, and the crowd certainly appreciated her.
Cousins was fun in Are You Gonna Be My Girl.
Jennifer Robinson also seemed to have trouble with the jumps tonight, stepping out of or two-footing most of them. Her At Last number was nice, but she didn't use the more familiar Etta James version, which was disappointing.
It's nice to see Weiss in a professional environment much more relaxed, doing backflips and the freedom blades move in his numbers. I'm Already There was a nice tribute to his kids, but sometimes it's like, "Okay already, we get it: you have a wife and kids. Can you talk about something else?"
I thought the Ladies in Lavender number was going to be better than it was. Nice layback from Robinson though.
Sale/Pelletier's Super Freak was very energetic and fun and got the crowd excited. I can't stop thinking about Little Miss Sunshine now whenever I hear the music though.
Todd Eldredge skated to a generic male ballad, which kind of bored me in the beginning, but I started to like it more as he went on. My friend commented that Eldredge is a good, solid skater that you can rely on, but he isn't necessarily the most exciting skater, and I agree.
Sato skated to a generic female ballad. Popped both the first double axel and what I assume was an attempt at a triple loop into singles. Still, I can see what everyone means when they say she's a "skater's skater." Very soft in the knees, quiet blades, and smooth as butter.
Yagudin impressed the crowd with his usual fancy footwork in his Spanish style number and did some playful tricks with his hat. Crowd really liked him and gave lots of cheers.
The 60's medley with the full cast was fun, although I did have a bit of trouble recognizing who was whom with all those wigs.
After intermission, the 24-themed group number began. At first, I wasn't sure what the podium was doing in the middle of the ice and didn't realize it was supposed to be a jewel heist until the alarms started going off.
Another tribute to Weiss' family in his second number, but I don't remember too much about it.
Robinson skated to Show Off from the Broadway musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. I've seen the musical and so was familiar with the music, so I knew I would enjoy it. It was very cute and playful, although it would have been more convincing if she didn't have trouble with the jumps (after all, the lyrics go, "I don't want to show off no more..."). Still, very cute, especially her encore and the transition into Sato/Dungjen.
Sato/Dungjen did a tango and landed a nice throw triple salchow. It's nice to see them tour together and Yuka almost made me forget she started off as a singles skater.
I really enjoyed Kulik skating to Go the Distance from Hercules. He was spot on tonight and had no trouble with any of the jumps, which is impressive almost 9 years after his Olympic win.
The guys' baseball group number was fun, especially hearing what sports they all dreamed about doing when they were kids.
Katia skated another Spanish themed number and fell/stepped out of the jumps, but had a really lovely transition into a flying camel. Seems the crowd was really behind her and wanted her to land a jump successfully.
Cousins skated to a Josh Groban song that had a religious undertone to it. That and the costume somewhat reminded me of Evan's Feeling Begins SP.
/Zimmerman probably got the loudest cheers of the night for their Melissa Etheridge rock number. They have a lift in which it seems Ina is flying (not sure how to explain it) that got the crowd gasping in excitement. It was really cool to see. Probably the highlight of the night for me.
udin skated to Blues for Klook for his second number and was his usual self. I recognized the music from gymnastics, so it was nice to see a skating interpretation of it.
e/Pelletier landed a nice throw triple salchow and had some nice lifts for their One number. But I'm used to the U2 version of the song.
as kind of surprised that Eldredge got the last solo performance of the night, since it doesn't seem like he's the star of the tour. In fact, it's kind of hard to tell who is being featured the most on the tour; I think SOI really needs some star quality. It's a shame none of the current Olympic champions signed on. Or Cohen for that matter, if rumors are true that she was offered a hefty sum to sign on with them. But anyway, Eldredge was solid in his Goo Goo Dolls number to Better Days.
finale to I Believe I Can Fly was also good. Not much else to say--I'd say that it's overall a good, solid show, but something is just missing. It needs a "wow" factor.
ms Sale/Pelletier, Yagudin, Gordeeva, and Eldredge consistently got the most/loudest applause.
and the Double Exposure thing is just...weird. I mean, it's supposed to be about how the skaters lead double lives, but the video interludes and the numbers don't really showcase that. Just because the skaters go home and cook dinner with their families and watch TV when they're not touring means they're leading a double life? It's disappointing that they couldn't come up with a better unifying theme.
