My night started when I got to my seat, Sec 2 row B right in the corner that everyone plays to. The opening was good, but I thought the crowd was on the quite side.
The first solo was Scott with "In The Mood". I don't really remember, "Oh, he did this jump and that footwork" but it was GOOD! Next was Kyoko & John, this was sexy, playful, and fun.
Now the first time to see Todd in his ringmaster costume. He came out holding a metronome arm and was going tick, tock, tick, tock. Then Yuka Sato came out, stopped him moved the weight so it 'ticked' in time to her music and started skating to "Misty". After Yuka was Jamie & David in a breathtaking skate to "Come Away With Me" They just seem to flow together. The third time bit. This one with Kyoko, Jenni, and Yuka. I thought this was just to long. It really dragged.
BUT, after them was Todd!!! I love this number, its upbeat, and I can see Todd having fun with it once he gets a few more performances under his belt. Oksana Baiul was next doing a J.Lo song. Followed by Elena & Anton, "Let Me Fall". This program is going to be one of my favorites from them. It was marred when Elena missed the land on the throw.
Ringmaster Todd came back out for "Jailbird" with John & Kyoko.
Todd: "What's she doing?"
John: "She's doing time."
Well, I thought it was funny.
Alexei's solo was slow, thoughtful. Everything implied for a "Memorial" Act 1 Ending. "TGIF" Started with all the guys, minus Alexie, coming out in gray jump suits. A cleaning crew. The best part was when they grab the legs and pulled them off! Black pants, with bright shirts and coats. Yellow, Pink, Red, Blue, Purple. Todd was in a yellow shirt and a blue coat. All in all, our boy looked hot. By this time, Alexie had changed and joined in. Not to long after the girls came out. They where in dresses the same colors as the guy's tops, but with black lace overlay. Todd seemed a lot more comfortable with the dancing then I have ever seen him. After the ending, Todd came back out to talk about Smucker's reading program.
Act 2 started with Todd, Alexie, David, and John back in the gray jumpsuits punching into work. Work being sweeping the ice, and wow did they ever sweep. The things they did with the brooms' Swapping, swinging, at one point John and David had Alexie hanging on two. The best move was John laying on the ice swinging his broom in a big circle, when the broom got to him he would "hop" over it. Then the other three guys joined in.
Coming off this was Jenni & Todd with "Shall We Dance". This was a forgettable program, 'cus I don't remember anything about it. The three girls came out to do "4 X 2 = 8". Since I loved Schoolhouse Rock as a kid this was really cool for me, but I was disappointed that no one did a figure eight.
Now, Todd's second solo "When You Come Back to Me Again". Ever since I saw the movie Frequency back in 2000 I have want to see Todd skate to this song, so - Yeah!!! It was just beautiful./p>
Another time bit. Scott comes out to skate and is told that Todd's took too much time with his applause, so Scott can't skate. "Sunscreen" From the man who gave us "Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, and Moulon Rouge" comes this neat little list of do's and don'ts for your life. The choreography was so boring I spent most of this just trying to see what David Pelletier's tattoo is.
The second showing for Elena & Anton was almost funny. Traditional Russian music, the crowd started clapping in time, but soon had sped up way past the beat. I was almost on the floor laughing at this. Elena missed the landing of the throw and came really close to sitting on the first row. Scott tried to do his number, but instead we got Oksana's "Swan Lake" Not to be mean, but this performance was just missing so much that I wished she would just get to the part where the swan dies.
Now the third time for ringmaster Todd. I don't know how a "Rock Lesson" fit into the "Time" theme, but I got to see Todd do the classic behind-the-back leg pull, so who cares. This did, however, segued nicely into Alexie's "Ain't That a Shame" Alexie pulled this off wonderfully. I thought it was the best solo of the night. After Alexie, were Jamie & David, this was a really fun number. It started with David's character being intro-ed for his final dance and Jamie's character still in the ladies room. This had Jamie & David "saying" or "thinking" things during the "dance". The best was while Jamie missed the landing of the throw; you could hear David "think" "You are so good!"
Now the third time was the charm for Scott, he did "Only One Life" and while it won't be remembered as one of his best, it was't bad. "Time" was pretty much like the opening, only everyone was in white instead of pink/salmon. I was glad for one thing; Todd and Alexie were teamed up, so I wasn't torn trying to watch two different parts of the ice.
Retakes came after, Oksana had a hard time with hers, everyone else was one shot and BAM! Right before Todd went for his jump, Scott wanted to do thank you's, and point out the who's who. So Todd just sort of skated in little circles.
After all this I got to talk to some really nice people at the back door. One girl, Mary was there for her sixth year. Another couple was down from Boston. I got see John Zimmerman's minivan, and Oksana's Hummer. Some lackey pulled Scott's SUV right up to the door and told some poor guy "Don't let them touch it." The "guard" was really nice, he was a publicist for the tour, and this was his first time seeing a skating show. So he talked to us, asked what skater did we like, where were we from, did we belong to any groups, what magazines did we read? Scott and his wife came and went, along with the state troopers who told us, "He's the last." So most of the fans left, but Mary, the publicist, and I were still talking when this black SUV pulls up and Alexie jumps out and runs into the building. He came back out and signed my program and the publicist took a photo of us. So all in all, I had a very good night.
