Stars on Ice - Baltimore, MD, 12/29/02
by Betsy Burkinshaw

First of all, it's a great show. All of the numbers are a bit different, not typical 'ice show' routines. Different music, choreography, lighting, everything. As a transplanted New Englander, I think I may even call it 'wicked cool'! The first half of the show is articularly good, especially because it is rather Todd-heavy. And that's good. *Very* *Very* *Very* Good! The picture in the program book of Todd in the opening number is practically worth the cost of admission. (my opinion, of ourse! :))

If you are going to this show, don't be late. Really. I promise, it's worth it to be early, 'cause Todd starts the whole show off! In jeans. Very Tight Jeans. In a t-shirt. Doing an Axel. Skating alone. (I wasn't analyzing the jumps, so forgive me for lack of technical details.) Then, all of the men come out the skate, also in tight jeans & t-shirts. The ladies did skate out at some time; but my attention was already quite taken, if you know what I mean! :)(can you say 'spiking estrogen levels?') A great opening number. And the skating was pretty good, too! :):)

d skated to Channel One Suite for the 1st half of the show. I think for this number, Todd's nickname should be temporarily changed from Skate Boy to Action Skating Man! That number just does not quit. It's even better & more high energy in person than it is on TV. Sorry, didn't get any notes on jumps last night, but he's in almost non-stop motion for the entire number. Great footwork. He looks very happy, too, while skating this number. He was completely selling this number, very flirty & almost (dare I say it?) sassy! :):).

first half of the show ends with a very interesting number. S&P and B&S came out to do a number together, then Todd comes out and grabs a microphone at the side of the rink. Lo and behold, Action Skating Man has morphed again into Great Voiceover Guy! Of course, the microphone didn't seem to work at first (Murphy's Law of live performances!) but he didn't miss a beat, and did a great job of skating AND reciting a poem, which the pairs skated to. And he did it all with microphone in hand, no less!

second half of the show is quieter & more low key than the first half. Except for the opening number. Male skaters. Tight jeans. Cowboy hats. What's a poor girl to do, except enjoy?! This number is just a whole lot of fun. The ending of this number is a classic! Todd (sadly) wasn't in this number, as he skated Miserere very soon afterwards.

Miserere is a classic Todd routine, gently serious and just some nice, solid skating. He wore a simple outfit of black pants and white shirt with a few sparklies on the back. I was hoping for the burgundy outfit we saw on TV last week, but perhaps it was for the best, as I may have had a heart attack if there had been anymore stimuli in the arena!

We didn't see Todd again until the closing number. All guys dressed in black, with leather-ish looking shirts and plain black pants, all ladies in hot pink dresses. And who ever said Todd couldn't dance? He did a great job-even did a little swivel hip thingy! Ok, ok, so he'll never audition for the re-make of 'Solid Gold', or "Saturday Night Fever' and he'll never be one of Britney Spears' background dancers (Thank Heavens!) but he did a great job. Looked as though he was having a great time, too.

Overall, I really liked this show. Lots of fun in denim! The only 'problem' was the rather quite crowd. Maybe I was in the narcoleptic geriatric section, but the crowd seemed to only respond to anything towards the end of the second half. I had a great seat, (thanks Kellie!), so the location wasn't an issue. Maybe the arena just has a lot of dead sound space, but lots of the people around me either didn't clap for anyone, or kept asking "Where's Michelle Kwan?" Go figure. I was having enough fun to cover entire sections! In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I'm seriously thinking of going to a city not-so-near-me to see it again. Philly, maybe?
