Stars on Ice - Worcester 4/8/02
by Melissa Schwatka.

I have to preface this review with that fact that I am not very good on telling jumps so my review of things will be short. Also warning you that I am a bit biased to the SOI of old days so keep that in mind.

And since I don't have my program everything is kind of as I remember.

First, the attendance was horrible. I would say it was only a bit over half full. The section next to me practically had no people. Most folks moved around. My seats were decent so I didn't move.

Opening number pretty good, but I think everyone was off sync. It didn't have it's usually flow that I am use to. Also, I didn't like with the folks introducing themselves. Felt like the Mickey Mouse Club.

With Lady Marmalade, same as I mentioned, everyone looked out of sync. It didn't gel like I have seen things gel before.

Not a big fan of the "filler talking points" between numbers. Could have done without them. Don't think it provided much transition if that was the purpose. Tango number with the couples was cool, I watched Oleg and Angelika since they do that stuff and they were great.

Todd Sand introduced Todd Eldridge, and let me tell you his program was awesome and that is the happiest I have ever seen Todd. He smiled the whole way through his program. He looked so much more relaxed. Much different than when I saw the same program in SLC. Todd got a standing Ovation for this number.

Mirror tango program was cool. Kudos to the boys for all the hard work.

Oleg and Angelika were pretty cool, the folks with me really liked it. I didn't like the lift where Angelika is flipped upside down with her legs spread wide open. Kind of weird.

Tara's Color of Roses, is a nice program, but you can tell that the hip has slowed her down a bit. I miss the speed of her spins, and she doesn't jump as much as she use to. She needs to do something different with her hair for that number.

Kurt's Guitar number was okay, didn't grab me like he normally does. He seemed a bit slow and off that night. Which bummed me out because I love Kurt, and since Scotty and Paul have both left, he's the last of my top 3 on the tour.

Steven's number was great, he hit most of his jumps and looked like he was having fun.

Ilia was AWESOME...Jumps were incredible. All three of his solos are just great. I think he's got some of his edge back. I haven't seen him with that much speed and that high on the jumps in a couple years.

Kristi's GOLD was absolutely specatcular. My only beef was that it should have been in the second act as her closer. I think the placement was not right for such a fabulous number.

Okay the G-O-L-D number was what other thought..."WHY". Makes them all look a bit self centered if you ask me. I know they didn't write it but it just was not needed. I kept going WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!!

Seeing the guys in fishnets was pretty funny but again didn't do much for me.

2nd Act-

Lucinda was perfect, very graceful and spins were cool.

Rainy Days-Okay what was the point of that...again more filler not needed. Made no sense, no real skating.

Jenni and Todd were graceful and amazing as usually, Jenni really fought for the landing on their throw. Very lovely number.

Kat's number was good, but will someone please get her a better costume.

Kristi's Janet Jackson number was cool , but should have been in first act. Gold was more appropriate as a closer solo.

Her pairs number with Denis was spectacular. I loved every minute of it. I gave them a Standing O but not many other folks did.

Todd's Your Song, was great, I think he doubled one jump but it didn't matter because again he was so happy and so relaxed and the program was GREAT. Standing O for him from the Audience. I have become such a huge fan of Todd recently. HOPEFULLY HE'LL be back next year!!! I will pay the price just to see him!!!

Kurt's elevation program was again, okay not his best. He must have had an off night. Didn't do much for me and I couldnt' give him a standing O. Only a bit of the audience did. Just wasn't his evening, which was such a bummer for me.

Tara's American tribute was nice, but I think she smiled too much for such a serious number. Not that I wanted her to be all somber, but just different facial expressions. She got a Standing O but I think it was more for the symbolism of the program than her skating great. I really do hope she takes time off to let that hip heal properly.

Ending was okay but not like they have been in the past where I didn't want it to end. The solo Kurt had was the best he did all night.

Overall there were some good points but a lot of improvement needs to be done to be at the level they were at before. I mean even while Scotty was there. The last 3 years or so have been just okay to me. The change of the overall feel of the show has left me disappointed. I miss the days of old. I think the shows were put together better and it was much simpler.

I can tell that others feel the same way as evidence in such a huge drop in attendance, not just in Worcester but all over the country.
