Stars on Ice - Trenton, NJ 4/20/02
by Tara

Just got home from Trenton (I live about 60 miles away... though no distance is too long to see Todd). I'm basically going to focus on Todd, but will give some general notes on the others.

Overall, everyone was really on tonight.. there were no falls, just a couple of so-so landings. The arena was I'd just about half full. The audience was pretty good as well, compared to when I go to COI at the Continental Airlines Arena.

Now on to important things... TODD!!! Wow! I've seen him skate live about 5 times now, though never in competition, and every time I see him, I'm just amazed over the speed he has and the command he has over the ice!

Lord of the Rings: First off, when Kurt introduced him, and said "6 time US Champion... " the crowd reacted like they knew exactly who he was talking about.. and he got a great reception before even skating. Having only heard the music on TV, and not live, I didn't realize the music was THAT powerful... wow! Todd skated well.. the only thing was that he singled the second triple axel, but everything else.. yes even the salchow was 'nicely done.' That really is an excellent program... it's amazing how much more you appreciate the power of the music and of the skater when you see skating live. He received a partial standing ovation for his performance.

Your Song: On the way to the arena, we had the radio on, and what song happened to come on but "Your Song" (the Elton John version). Anyhoo.. .when Todd came out, before they put the spotlight on him, the ladies next to me were saying "is that Todd??? and then one of them said "oh, it must be, he's wearing black"... LOL!!! Again, another great performance! He landed all of his jumps.. kinda looked like he was going to put a hand down on the 3 axel, but resisted. His spins were even better during Your Song then they were for LOTR. He was just flying out there. I really enjoyed this program and the crowd did too since he received an even better ovation (more people were standing this time), and seemed genuinely happy throughout the entire performance... always had a huge smile on his face! He also blew a kiss to the audience before skating off.

In the finale, he did a HUGE 3 axel and landed a couple 3 toes. He looked really comfortable in the finale with the rest of the cast. You would never know he has only been with the tour since the end of February.

I actually enjoyed the show more than I thought I would.. I think it definitely loses something on the TV. I could've done without the G-O-L-D thing, and Kurt and Tara reciting Rainy Days, but other than that most of it wasn't that bad. A couple other people did get standing O's.. Kristi and Denis for "I'll Fly Away", Kurt for "Elevation" and Tara for her American Tribute, plus the cast got one after the finale.

Well, I hope everyone is still awake... I honestly didn't think it was going to be this long, but I'm still coming down from the excitement of seeing Todd.
