Champions on Ice 1997
by Christie Sayre

Detroit, MI, May 11, 1997

Both Todd and Lloyd Eisler wore Detroit Red Wings jerseys for the opening. Todd skated to a country song I did not recognize. Probably the same one. One triple jump (sorry I didn't catch the entry, so I can't tell you which one) and of course great spins.

Todd skated third in the second half again. Of course he skated to Close Every Door. This performance was very well received. Todd's jump elements: triple flip, popped his triple axel into a single, triple toe/double toe, double loop, triple toe, double axel, and another double axel. Plus several wonderful spin combinations, all with amazing control and speed. There is no question who has the best spins on this tour!

For the closing, Todd skated to Disco Inferno (referred to earlier as "Burn, Baby, Burn") wearing the shirt ABC showed in the closing credits of their TOC broadcast. It seems to have black and white checks, which give the shirt an overall grey color appearance, with a multi-colored section down the front. In this he performed a big double axel.

Todd was definitely the highlight of the show for me. I wasn't wild about Close Every Door when I first saw it on TV, but I have grown to love this number. Seeing the show in person, it is obvious that more thought was put into this exhibition number than most of the other skaters' numbers. Todd has just grown so much artistically in the last couple of years. It says a lot when you can hold an audience's full attention with a serious number and not resort to more popular dance music with posing, strutting, and otherwise playing to the audience.
